POSITION SUMMARY

Twenty-six miles northwest of Chemeketa Community College’s Salem campus, the Yamhill Valley Campus sits nestled in the picturesque town of McMinnville, OR. The Yamhill Valley Campus is a high-energy environment that serves a diverse community.

The Advising Specialist at the Yamhill Valley Campus provides academic advising and guidance to students enrolled in classes who are working on their GED, English Language skills (ESOL) or Developmental coursework (ABS); supports students working toward a degree or certificate. This position is also responsible for conducting recruitment and selection processes for program students, contextualized pathways, providing retention activities including, development of individual college success plans, progress monitoring, campus visitations, orientations, and program events. The position collaborates with a team to help students explore positive academic and life outcomes based on their goals and values; understands the value and significance of cultural competency. This role also provides supervision to our team of Student Leaders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Advising & Recruitment

  • Provide academic, career, transfer, financial aid, and success/persistence planning to students in general education, career technical, Title II (GED/ESOL), and Pathways programs regarding college programs, admissions, registration, student success resources, community resources and services, scholarship opportunities, etc. 
  • Develops initial Individual Success Plan with each student addressing both long-term and short-term academic, career, and transfer goals and assists students with planning to accomplish goals. Modifies plan with student as needed
  • Meet with each student on a regular basis; monitor progress of each student on case load; problem-solve and make appropriate referrals; serve as a liaison and advocate for students
  • Develop and present group presentations, campus tours/overviews, student orientations, workshops, college and career fairs, and other activities and workshops regarding subjects pertaining to student success and retention 
  • Conduct recruitment, lead student onboarding, and assist with registration of new and continuing program participants 
  • Builds and maintains relationships with community organization partners, acts as program liaison. This includes a specific focus on serving and connecting with our Hispanic/Latinx community, connections with community organizations with an educational focus, workforce development organizations, area businesses and identifying adult student populations within our community interested in enrollment.

Coaching, Student Success & Retention

  • Fosters and develops ongoing relationships with students to support them in setting, tracking, and modifying incremental steps towards completion of long-term benchmarks.
  • Structures dialogue to help students recognize needs, identifies barriers that hinder, and acknowledges values and strengths that contribute to their academic persistence and retention.
  • Coordinates YVC campus clubs and activities; provides supervision for a team of student leaders who support the planning and implementation of campus life events & activities and support our recruitment efforts

Program Support & Services

  • Supports the documentation, tracking and reporting of grant outcomes- including GED test vouchers and completion, determining student STEP program eligibility, CASAS and writing assessments, and Title II funding requirements, GED/ESOL transition scholarships
  • May assist in the supervision and training of part-time employees including classroom attendants and work-study students

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree from an accredited institution
-AND-
Two years of related experience working with diverse groups (i.e. marginalized, economically disadvantaged, neuro-diverse, second language learners, culturally distinct, gender differences, individuals with disabilities)
-AND-
Bilingual English/Spanish

  • Coursework in counseling, adult education, or related field
  • Experience working at a community college
  • Experience providing wrap-around support services
  • Experience giving presentations and/or facilitating group discussions

SCHEDULE & MODALITY

Regular remote/hybrid work is not a feature of this position. At the supervisor's discretion, exemptions may be made for special projects or responsibilities requiring periodic needed focus time.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a 100%, 12-month classified assignment of the B3 band and grade
  • Please note:The college is currently undertaking a comprehensive classification and compensation study. No employee will lose base pay because of this study, however, classification titles and pay grades may change. The successful candidate will receive notice of all changes prior to implementation which is currently projected for the Summer of 2024.
  • This position has a 6-month probationary period
  • All positions at Chemeketa are required to be available for work onsite as requested by the college.
  • Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends
  • This position may require the use of your personal vehicle for transportation between campus locations
  • If requested, requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire
  • Employees must maintain Oregon, Washington or Idaho residency as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary requirements are met.
