Salary:       $113,922 - $139,940/yr.

Status: full-time, exempt



Plans, directs and coordinates comprehensive legal services for the City.  The City Attorney provides counsel to the City Manager, City Council, City staff, committees and commissions; provides legal advice to guide City policies, decisions and activities; represents the City at various court levels in civil, criminal, and administrative hearings; drafts and interprets City ordinances and resolutions; negotiates real property acquisitions, participates in the City’s short and long-range planning to insure proper consideration of legal issues.  The City has outside contracts for prosecution and defense services in Municipal Court. The City Attorney may be called on from time to time to provide backup prosecution.  The City Attorney is also responsible for supervision of the Code Enforcement Officer.


Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with admission to practice law in the State of Washington.
  • Five years comprehensive legal experience.   Experience practicing in municipal government and in the practice of general municipal law is preferred.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with court systems and administrative hearings process.
  • Effective legal support work for elected officials and agency staff.
  • Experience in legal office management and experience with municipally owned utilities.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the candidate with the knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.

  • Driving record check with valid Washington state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association.
