JOB SUMMARY
This employee is responsible for providing accurate water meter readings for customer accounts. The employee also responds to customer-related issues, diagnoses and performs meter repairs/maintenance, assists in customer communication, and provides water quality support.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Superintendent and receives instruction and work assignments from the Service Tech Lead. This position may work independently or as part of a work crew. This position does not supervise other positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Takes accurate readings of assigned meters according to prescribed schedules and routes; locates and reads meters using a hand-held computer device; and enters any necessary follow-up codes.
- Investigates and reports to supervisor any cases of unusually high or low meter readings and any signs of meter bypassing, tampering, or other unauthorized usage.
- Installs automated meters including initial set-up and programming the meters.
- Responds to customer inquiries, problems, and complaints by working with property owners to investigate leaks and high water usage; and refers concerns to the Finance and Development/Service Departments.
- Prepares and submits meter reading follow-up code reports on a regular basis; performs brush trimming around all Firgrove appurtenances, box and lid repair or replacement, minor meter repairs, repainting of boxes, valves, and road markings; reports major meter repair or replacement, potential cross connections, and unauthorized usage.
- Places doorhangers for billing, cross connection control, and construction as needed.
- Performs meter locks and unlocks at the request of the Finance Department.
- Inspects and maintains vehicle by checking oil, fuel, and tires, observing the general condition of the vehicle on a routine basis, updating all equipment and manuals assigned to the vehicle, and following all rules, laws, and regulations while driving.
- Provides support and assistance with hydrant labeling and the safety program.
- Participates in ongoing cross training with emphasis on water quality.
- Assists with collecting and delivering water quality samples.
- Administers the Neighborhood Awareness Program, which includes providing informational notices to select customers via doorhangers.
- Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
- Must maintain regular and prompt attendance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Customer service techniques.
- Defensive driving practices and precautions.
- Safety rules and regulations.
Skill in:
- Driving safely in all weather and road conditions according to applicable laws.
- Reading road maps.
- Operating hand and power tools.
- Operating hand-held computers.
- Performing basic mathematical computations.
- Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships with all organizational levels, customers, and the public.
- Communicating and interacting with peers, supervisors, and the general public to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive direction.
Experience/Education:
- Experience in customer service, meter reading, and/or water services is preferred.
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the job.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License[1] with a driving record acceptable to the Company and its insurance carrier.
- Certified Flagger within one year of employment.
- Certified Water Distribution Specialist within one year of employment.
- Industrial First Aid and CPR Card within one year of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are performed primarily in the field with exposure to extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time, confined spaces, automobile traffic, and various tools and equipment. Work involves exposure to fumes, loud noises, chemicals, pesticides, hostile animals, and angry customers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position typically requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force more frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS
Firgrove offers a wage range of $24.76 - $31.60 and a competitive benefits package including vacation, sick leave, medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, and retirement.
