ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN FINANCE BOARD
The New York City campaign Finance Board is a nonpartisan, independent city agency that enhances the role of New York City residents in elections. We are dedicated to making our local democracy more open, transparent, and equitable. We eliminate barriers to participation by providing access to the information and resources New Yorkers need to vote or run for office and reduce the corrupting influence of money in politics by enhancing the impact of New Yorkers’ small-dollar contributions. You would be working with a staff and leadership that is mission driven and committed to continuous improvement for the staff and the public.
ABOUT THE UNIT/DEPARTMENT
The New York City Campaign Finance Board is looking for an Executive Director to lead the nationally recognized organization with a staff of approximately 160 employees and a 2023 fiscal year budget of $80 million with multiple mandates in campaign finance and voting education and engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- PROVIDE LEADERSHIP
- Create long-term strategies for the agency.
- Set agency-wide priorities and goals and ensure goals are implemented at the division level.
- Establish agency culture, expectations, and work standards.
- Recognize, create, and support opportunities for innovation in technology, staff hiring and retention, diversity, and programming.
- MANAGE EMPLOYEES, PROCESSES, AND PROGRAMS
- Appropriately position staff for maximal effectiveness.
- Ensure agency work quality is superior and completed according to deadlines.
- Create and maintain the organization budget by working with both staff and external city partners.
- Work with the Executive Team to ensure divisions’ work is proceeding efficiently and agency’s goals are being achieved.
- ADVISE AND SUPPORT THE BOARD
- Supervise preparation of materials for use in the Board’s adjudicative process.
- Provide guidance and staff point of view to Board on advisory opinions and policy issues.
- Provide regular updates on staff work and present issues of potential agency exposure.
- ACT AS OUTWARD FACE FOR CFB
- When needed, act as the public face of the agency.
- With Board and Public Affairs team, define agency press message; appear in media interviews.
- Support legislative agenda and testify before City Council.
- Represent agency interests before other government bodies.
- Provide assistance to other jurisdictions based on CFB’s work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree and 7 plus years of experience including at least 2 years management, or equivalent.
- Proven ability to manage a diverse and mission-driven work force.
- Ability to understand financial and legal concepts and documents.
- Familiarity with election, campaign finance, and voting rights law and policy.
- Ability to work with Board of Directors, legislature, and press.

- Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills.
- Superior relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Keen judgment and critical-thinking skills and demonstrable ability to understand and apply complex legal concepts.
- Creative approach to solving problems and drawing conclusions, which might include the use of technology.
- Ability to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands.
- Meticulous attention to detail while also maintaining an overarching view of departmental and agency goals and objectives.
- Leadership capabilities to manage a diverse staff and set and enforce deadlines.
- Successful track record in setting priorities and meeting goals.
- Demonstrated ability to guide a senior management team to provide leadership, strategic direction, and initiatives for the agency.
- Personal qualities of integrity, empathy, credibility, a growth mindset, and dedication to the mission of CFB.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS THAT MAY BE CONSIDERED
- Experience developing and managing a budget.
- A law degree and legal experience.
- A finance degree or experience.
- Experience in government (particularly New York City government).
