The Communications Equipment Installers apply their knowledge of electronic theory and practice to assist in the installation, removal and maintenance of fixed-station and complex mobile communication equipment. This is an entry-level technician classification that will receive project and program direction from the Communication Systems Technologist Supervisor when working on technically complex equipment and will work increasingly more independent as they become more proficient.
- Essential Functions
- The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

- Install, maintain, and repair emergency lighting equipment, mobile antenna systems, radio control heads, map lights, strobe lighting equipment, radio consoles, trunk mount transceivers, flashing devices and other specialized equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on two-way radios and antenna systems.
- Operate testing and measuring equipment including voltmeters, ohmmeters, watt-meters, current meters, and other systems.
- Assist with laying out and building various projects designed by a technical supervisor including cable harness and warning light control systems.
- Install and remove all types of two-way mobile radios, mobile data devices and fixed site mobile equipment. Assists with the assembly, installation and relocation of various accessories, control consoles, base stations, mobile radio units, building and vehicular cabling and antennas.
- Assists with repairs on various electronic devices such as artificial vision technology (Mobileye), mobile cameras and recording systems, automatic passenger counters, Smart Card (Ng ORCA), automated vehicle announcement systems; and maintains serviceability and compliance with all warranty programs.
- Assists in performing scheduled preventative maintenance schedules on mobile and fixed communications and related components to maintain OEM best engineering practices and any warranty program requirements.
- Modify components and units to increase operating efficiency of the system.
- Maintain computerized and manual service records and inventory records.
- Maintains the ability to operate all job-related vehicles.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Qualifications

Knowledge of and skill in applying:
Demonstrated knowledge of installation and two-way mobile radio maintenance practices and procedures;
Basic electronics, communication equipment and auxiliary equipment;
Basic antenna, transmission line and propagation theory;
Basic mathematics as applied to electronics;
Basic FCC Rules and Regulations pertaining to Public Safety Radio services, microwave radio services, data communications, and telephone systems;
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installation, maintenance and repair of communications equipment;
Required federal and state regulations with respect to communications equipment and systems;
Safety procedures and practices.-
Skill in and ability to:
Safely operate a variety of electronic and power equipment;
Use basic electronic test equipment to identify failure locations;
Communicate with other employees and vendors for purposes of technical problem resolution and meeting timelines;
Work effectively with individuals or small groups with diverse personalities and backgrounds;
Read and follow wiring schematics;
Operate communications equipment in accordance with FCC rules and regulations;
Understand and follow written and verbal instructions;
Effectively perform and complete multiple duties and assignments concurrently and in a timely manner;
Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain Washington State driver's license and CDL.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required: AA degree in Electronic & Communications Systems Technology or, a related field; successful completion of a vocational training program; or, military electronics training involving communications equipment, analog and digital circuitry, and test equipment and one (1) year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of communications equipment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position. Desired: General FCC radio/telephone operator's license (GROL). Special Requirements: Must be able to pass a CJIS security background check and possess a valid Washington State driver's license at the time of hire. Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License Permit within 30 days of hire. Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of hire.Supplemental Information
