PURPOSE: The Port of Seattle is committed to developing high-quality Operating Engineer Journeymen via the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Apprenticeship program. The successful Apprentice must be able to commit four (4) years to the program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Under the guidance and supervision of skilled Journeymen Operating Engineers, the Apprentice will learn the operations and maintenance of boilers, air compressors, pumps, refrigeration units, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, HVAC systems, domestic water system and Industrial Waste Water Treatment System via on-the-job training. In addition, the Apprentice will learn how to operate stationary and portable power tools as well as welding and soldering equipment. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Must have basic knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance. Must have basic hands-on mechanical skills in areas of machining, hand and power tools, and HVAC fundamentals. Must be willing to learn new practical skills from all Journeymen Operating Engineers. Must have basic computer skills. Must have the ability to read and understand basic drawings and technical manuals.
