French and Spanish Teacher

French and Spanish Teacher, Lower School
(Grades Pre-K – Grade 5)
The Roeper School is a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades Pre-K through twelve. We are seeking a part-time (60% FTE) French and Spanish Teacher for the Lower School to join our Bloomfield Hills campus faculty for the 2020-2021 school year.
We seek a Modern World Language Teacher who is fluent in both French and Spanish and will provide an intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. The preferred candidate will use knowledge of the French and Spanish cultures to provide individualized instruction and education for the whole child. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person who works well as part of a team and independently. The teacher will be adept at using American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards, methodologies of teaching languages.
The primary role of the Teacher is to introduce and teach French to students in preschool through grade five. The Language Teacher will also teach Spanish to students in grades two through five. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to create a warm and nurturing classroom environment, and to build and maintain a positive and collaborative relationship with peers. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and training in elementary education.
Position Description:
- Use Modern World Language best practices to introduce and teach French and Spanish language and culture to students
- Implement an academically strong, child-centered and differentiated curriculum to gifted children
- Identify and meet the diverse needs of learners by being flexible and using creative approaches while facilitating the social and emotional development of the students in mixed-age classes
- Collaborate with Lower School World Language Coordinator to develop scope and sequence of French and Spanish program
- Develop, implement and sustain curriculum for a comprehensive French and Spanish program that aligns with Modern World Language standards and evidence based best practices for gifted learners.
- Provide instruction using American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards, methodologies of teaching language
- Utilize knowledge of a variety of instructional and assessment methods, integrated use of technology, and excellent communication skills
- Develop and maintain cohesive and balanced professional partnership with Lower School World Language faculty
- Work collaboratively with World Language Curriculum Coordinator to ensure utilization of best practices
- Collaborate with Middle and Upper School World Language faculty to facilitate learning progression between stages and ensure delivery of comprehensive program
- Collaborate with classroom teachers on cross-curricular units to support student development in knowledge and understanding of language and culture to achieve objective of developing citizens of the world
- Share student progress with parents through communication including conferences and progress reports
- Maintain effective communication with students, teachers, colleagues and administration
- Collaborate with Lower School faculty on school wide initiatives and support of education through varied activities including meeting attendance, committee participation and providing supervision for lunch, recess, and after school duty
- Provide support to World Language department and the Lower School to meet overall mission of The Roeper School
- Embrace and implement a multicultural and culturally relevant curriculum, in accordance with Roeper's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Credentials:
The preferred candidate will have:
- Fluency in French and Spanish is required
- Experience teaching French and Spanish to elementary school students
- Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners
- Excellent instructional and communication skills
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively to contribute and reach objectives
Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in Spanish and or French, Education or other relevant field is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
- A minimum of three to five years of teaching experience in an elementary school is preferred.
