General Summary: Applies paint and other protective coatings to interior and exterior surfaces. Maintains paint and painting equipment inventory. Trains, directs, and supervises part-time seasonal workers.
Job Description:
- Removes old coatings such as paint and wall paper.
- Prepares surfaces using materials such as sand paper, paint remover, and steel wool, and equipment such as wire brushes, and scrapers.
- Repairs surfaces by caulking nail holes, cracks, and joints by patching plaster and sheet rock surfaces.
- Proficient in installing, taping, mudding, texturing, and finishing drywall.
- Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to all types of interior and exterior building surfaces, building trim, windows, doors, machines, metal shelving, and equipment by brushing, rolling, or spray painting. Applies paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to create special effects such as wood grain, marble, brick, tile, or other decorative effects. Applies wall coverings, refinishes hardwood floors, shelving, and wood furniture.
- Performs ancillary protective work such as erecting barriers, posting signage, masking baseboards, doorframes, and windows; placing drop cloths; Protects work area furnishings and surfaces, and removing pictures, switch plates and outlet covers. Maintains neat and tidy work area. Confines dust to work area by properly placing zippered wall containment plastic sheeting. Provides secondary spill containment when transporting paint.
- Mixes/blends colors at proper consistency for application with brushes and rollers.
- Maintains paint and painting equipment inventory. Maintains accurate record of paint colors pertaining to all campus facilities. Responsible for cleaning equipment and maintaining a clean paint inventory area.
- Carries and deploys ladders. Performs work from ladders, elevated platforms and rooftops.
- Inspects work site for planned work's impact on other faculty and staff. Consults with supervisor and Facilities departmental safety plans to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Works with the Maintenance Foreman to ensure proper Fall Protection protocols are in place for self and staff you are supervising while performing work. Works with supervisor to either prevent or communicate planned outages with key campus faculty, staff, and departments.
- Leads and instructs other trades personnel in the application and maintenance of painted surfaces.
- Training and supervision of 8-10 seasonal temporary employees / student workers.
- Will be on-call on a rotating basis approximately four times a year. The person on-call is responsible to be available via phone or pager during off-hours, including weekends, and be able to respond to the campus within two hours of being contacted. While serving on-call this position may perform a variety of maintenance activities such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, door hardware/locks.
- All Facilities employees are designated as "essential staff" and are subject to working during times that the university closes due to inclement weather or an emergency.
REGULATED BUILDING MATERIALS ABATER:
- Abates minor amounts of asbestos, lead, and mold under direction and supervision of an Asbestos Supervisor. Earns and maintains an EPA Lead Renovator Certification (8-hr). Earns and maintains a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification. (May serve as the back-up to the Asbestos Supervisor in their absence, if 40-hour certified.) Receive training and perform some mold remediation.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of 4 years journeyman level work experience in paint application. Journeyman level certification or graduation from a vocation technical school in painting is a plus.
- Leadership experience; comfortable training and supervising a team.
- Work experience that proves good judgement in making decisions, asking for help, bringing forward problems, communicating efficiently with others, and working around moving machinery and electricity.
- Ability to drive service vehicle. Valid Washington State Driver's License and good driving record.
- Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification (training will be provided as needed); EPA Lead Renovator Certification (8-hour).
- Ability to achieve and maintain a 40-hour Asbestos Supervisor Certification is preferred. Fall Arrest training, preferred.
- Mold remediation training or experience and knowledge of or experience with building codes, electrical codes, and fire codes is a plus.
- Must be physically able to wear a tight fitting half mask respirator and pass annual medical exam. Must be physically able to perform mold remediation (training will be provided).
- Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade.
- Must be able to load and unload materials. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must be able to carry, deploy, climb and lift different size ladders. Must be comfortable at heights and able to work from ladders, elevated platforms, and building roofs. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment. Must be able to access all areas of campus, including building roofs, any hour of the day or night.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to learn and act on new technical or complex information. Effective work habits, including commitment to quality of work, attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office products including Outlook email, Word, Excel.
- Experience with TMA work order tracking software is a plus.
- Strong commitment to the University's Christian ministry and mission statement.
Additional Information:
Position will remain open until filled.
Salary: $55,000 - $59,000 DOE
This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes contributions to an employee HSA account and to a retirement account after one year of eligibility in the plan. Tuition discount program available for the employee and qualified immediate family members.
