The Board of The Phoenix Symphony (TPS) seeks a visionary, strategic, and innovative President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the premier arts organization in one of the fastest-growing cities in America.
Founded in 1947 as a part-time orchestra, TPS achieved full-time status in 1983 and is now Arizona’s largest performing arts organization. The core mission of The Phoenix Symphony is to provide the joy of live music as a catalyst for discovery, knowledge, compassion, and connection. Under the creative leadership of Tito Muñoz, Virginia G. Piper Music Director, the orchestra continues to receive national and international recognition attracting the world’s top musicians to Phoenix. Guest artists have included Vadym Kholodenko, Chloë Hanslip, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah Chang, and Gil Shaham. Pops artists have included Idina Menzel, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Renée Elise Goldsberry in recent years.
The CEO will join an impressive team of staff and musicians and will be tasked with ensuring that TPS is a destination orchestra for top talent in all areas. In addition, the Phoenix Symphony Learning Institute operates a variety of programs that reach over 125,000 students, adults, and families every year, including school-based concerts, a cross-cultural musical residency with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and a professional development model to train teachers and Symphony musicians to teach and assess STEM concepts through music. Many of these programs allow direct connection between Symphony musicians and the greater Phoenix community. The next CEO will be a leader in the Phoenix arts and non-profit communities, connecting TPS with a remarkable set of organizations in a dynamic city.
The outgoing CEO, Suzanne Wilson, was appointed in January of 2020 and will step down from her position to relocate to London, England for a unique opportunity presented to her family. Suzanne redefined the business model and culture of the organization to ensure its sustainability, reintroduced robust community programs, and yielded the largest gift in the history of the organization, a transformative gift from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
The next CEO will build on this exciting momentum to ensure the continued financial and creative success of TPS while building deeper connections between staff, musicians, and the Board. Given the national upheavals in performing arts during the pandemic, the new CEO will creatively introduce new revenue streams while building on the recent philanthropic success to secure financial standing. The next CEO will continue to ensure TPS’s vital responsibility to make diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization a top priority as Phoenix and the surrounding areas continue to grow.
