JOB SUMMARY

This position works under the direction of the Director of Student Services. Advises students about academic programs, plans of study, and/or policies as well as co-curricular opportunities and extracurricular engagement. The individual will coordinate the campus's Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program and collaborate with other student-centered offices to implement efforts supporting student success. Serves as an on-site resource person to faculty, staff, and students. The individual will work as part of a dynamic team advising undergraduates with personalized curriculum decisions and will also coordinate the campus's Freshman Year Experience, oversee the UConn Waterbury Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) Program, and advise UConn Waterbury students in the Honors Program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise students in personalized curriculum decisions including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
  • Provide support services and course advising for UConn Waterbury’s non-degree study students and transfer students.
  • Advise students in the Honors Program and assist them in completing program requirements, by ensuring UConn Waterbury has the appropriate number of honors sections and guiding students with honors conversion classes.
  • Advise Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) students and oversee BGS program activities. This includes recruiting students, tracking their academic progress, and ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Create plans of study to support students in their educational needs, career goals, and professional development.
  • Audit student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
  • Review and advocate for students regarding probation, dismissal, and financial aid appeals.
  • Support and help manage the First Year Experience (FYE) program and serve as an instructor for the course. This includes organizing and overseeing the FYE program implementation at UConn Waterbury, scheduling instructors, developing a standard syllabus, coordinating special speakers, and ensuring compliance with university standards for FYE.
  • Refer students to other campus and university resources, which may include Career Services, Tutoring, the Center for Students with Disability, and Counseling and Mental Health Services.
  • Assist in planning and implementing scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs, and other activities, as assigned.
  • Serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents and guardians, and others with questions about programs or academic policies and collaborate with other departments and offices to create and deliver presentation materials at events.
  • Coordinate and implement programs to promote recruitment and retention of students.
  • Serve on campus and/or University committees.
  • Perform related work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree and 4 years of post-bachelor's experience in advising students in a higher education setting OR Master's degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience in advising students in a higher education setting.
  2. Experience counseling low-income, first-generation, or minority students in a higher education setting.
  3. Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and parents.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree with 2-3 years of experience in a position that includes advising, counseling, or coaching in a higher education setting or bachelor’s degree.
  2. Experience with teaching and/or conducting workshops in a higher education setting.
  3. Ability to complete tasks of high quality and integrity.
  4. Capacity to work independently, assess programmatic needs, and develop creative solutions.
  5. Team-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills.

This is a full-time, permanent position. This position may require some weekend and evening hours.
