JOB SUMMARY

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), Shared Services Facilities Services is seeking a Facilities/Building Professional to ensure the smooth operation of research science buildings managed by CLAS. This position acts as a liaison between the building occupants and Facilities Operations. Under the direction of the Director of CLAS Shared Services Facility Services and in consultation with the CLAS Facility/Building Managers, the candidate must have a strong understanding of building systems, departmental programs that operate within assigned areas, and how they can impact each other. The successful candidate will oversee and participate in the necessary maintenance and repairs of the building to ensure functional integrity for teaching and research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the main contact (and in consultation with the Facility/Building Managers) for building occupants for routine and emergency maintenance and repair requests.
    • Monitor the condition of the building by performing regular walkthrough inspections. Address or report maintenance or cleaning needs to proper staff through prescribed methods.
    • Assist building occupants with the submission of work orders to Facilities as needed and monitor their progress.
    • Assist in providing building access/escort to Facilities, University personnel, and outside vendors and contractors.
    • Work closely with faculty and staff to provide solutions to facility-related problems.
    • Respond to building emergencies. Serves as primary emergency contact throughout the year, including semester breaks, weekends, and holidays.
    • Responsible for building security, including key request assistance, programming, and minor maintenance of electronic security lock systems.
    • Assist building occupants with shipping, receiving, and moving tasks.
    • Maintenance and installation of some laboratory equipment, cabinetry, shelving, painting chores, etc.
    • Communicates with the appropriate Facilities staff when critical work in assigned buildings is incomplete.
    • Serves as liaison to Public Safety, Transportation/Parking Services, EHS, and other University entities in emergency response situations and for safety-related topics.
    • Procure materials and supplies for maintenance and renovation projects as necessary, maintains standing contracts with vendors when applicable.
    • Prepares rooms for occupancy after renovations or major repairs occur.
    • Supervision of small groups of student workers.
    • Assist building occupants with inventory and Surplus related tasks.
  • Laboratory Safety
    • Troubleshooter and advisor for problems that arise regarding the safety of building or laboratory facilities.
    • Remain up to date on required University safety training.
    • Serve as the department contact for the Office of Environment, Health, and Safety.
    • Understand hazardous material safety guidelines per University protocols.
  • Respond to projects from CLAS Facilities/Building managers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by CLAS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eight or more years of related experience in a variety of trades relevant to general building functions including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and mechanical, or a combination of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of building materials and methods.
  • General abilities with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly with Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with faculty members, staff, and students.
  • Valid driver’s license (ability to drive University vehicles).
  • Ability to climb ladders, kneel, reach above the shoulder, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, and may be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of building systems and building management best practices.
  • Experience in specifying and purchasing parts or equipment.
  • Experience working in an academic or laboratory/research setting. 
  • Understanding and minor maintenance of water purification systems, laboratory hoods, and electronic locksets.
  • Ability to work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position with an excellent benefits package. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
