RESEARCH TECHNICIAN
University of Kansas – Department of Geology, Research Technician
This is advanced technical research work in the preparation of geological samples for analysis including design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, technique development and operation. This work includes primarily, the cutting and polishing of rock samples for preparation of polished thin sections, polished rock slabs and the preparation and polishing of epoxy grain mounts. Work may also include preparation and analysis of other geological samples, maintenance and repair of rock preparation and microscope equipment, inventory and ordering of expendables for laboratories, training of other users in proper use of equipment and preparation of geological samples. Work will include invoicing for the services provided and active advertising and marketing of services to potential users within and outside the university. There is an original research component focused on technique development in geologic sample preparation and database duties relating to rock and thin section collections. Must have physical ability to operate rock preparation equipment and to prepare thin sections for analysis. This position is contingent upon available funding. The required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in the Geosciences and at least one year of training or job experience that is rock-based, and training or experience in petrography. The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
