Electrical Engineer
Scope and Major Responsibilities
Seeking a well-rounded electrical engineer interested in the planning, design and operation of electric power systems. Primary responsibilities include performing power system studies, maintenance of multiple engineering software models and the troubleshooting and analysis of system disturbances.
S/he will have fundamental knowledge of substation primary electrical equipment and secondary protection and control systems (or the ability to learn these skills). Skills and knowledge will include reading and interpreting electrical schematics, performing electrical computations and developing configuration files for microprocessor based protective relaying devices and other substation intelligent electronic devices.
Maintenance and up-keep of system short circuit models, equipment thermal ratings databases and miscellaneous engineering software packages.
- Candidate shall be proficient in the use and maintenance of various engineering software packages. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office suite and short circuit modeling software is desired.
- Participate in regional working groups such as the ISO-NE short circuit working group in the development of short circuit model maintenance standards and work practices.
- Perform short circuit studies, fault clearing studies and similar analytical studies and deliver results and recommendations in engineering reports.
- Assist system protection engineers in the development of power system analysis electrical computations and relay coordination studies associated with protective relaying equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of the per-unit analysis is desirable.
- Support engineering department with meeting NERC and other regional reliability compliance standards.
Perform analysis of protective relay system operations resulting from system disturbances and explain results to VELCO Operations personnel and others requiring this information.
Provide on-call support in the event of disturbances to the transmission system whereby prolonged equipment or customer outages may occur.
Assist electrical engineering staff in the design of protective relay systems, revenue metering, and SCADA monitoring and control systems with input from all VELCO departments. Effectively communicate and coordinate with VELCO disciplines to ensure systems are designed to meet applicable industry standards and VELCO’s corporate objectives for a safe, reliable and economic transmission system.
- Assist with the development, review and maintenance of VELCO substation design standards, engineering procedures, and equipment configuration setting templates.
- Work with CAD/GIS group on the development and maintenance of protection and control schematic drawings. Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software is desirable.
- Assist in the training of maintenance technicians and system operators for new system installations or changes to the system, as required.
- Perform project engineering duties for various types of substation projects.
Assist in the commissioning oversight of new and upgraded substations and their subsystems, on both large and small projects, to ensure that systems have been installed and commissioned per the “engineered” design. Perform pre-commissioning “readiness” reviews with assigned field personnel.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required. A discipline in Power Systems is preferred. Experience in the area of system protection and controls is desirable along with demonstrable knowledge of electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor technology or equivalent combination of experience and education. The individual who fulfills this position must possess the ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Superior written and verbal communications skills are essential.
The description above reflects the most specific duties performed but does not exclude the occasional work assignments not mentioned.
