College/Area: College of Veterinary Medicine
Hiring Unit: Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology
Department Link: College of Veterinary Medicine
Work Location: Pullman
Zip Code: 99164-7040
Responsibilities:
The position is defined as approximately 75 percent research/graduate education and 25 percent outreach. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a productive research program on elk hoof disease and related research in the areas of infectious disease at the livestock-wildlife-human interface. The goal is to determine conclusively the underlying cause(s), transmission dynamics, including any link to transmission between elk and domestic livestock, and the role of human-ecosystem interactions. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the Washington State Department of Agriculture, Native American tribes and other national and international agencies that can lend expertise and field activities to develop solutions. A significant part of the new program is outreach, communicating research findings to the general public and could be supported by the existing WSU Veterinary Medicine Extension Program. Additional responsibilities include supervision of support staff conducting a surveillance program in Washington, especially the southwest region, and managing a digital information asset management system for tracking and surveillance in collaboration with other agencies. Candidates with a research emphasis on wildlife epidemiology and ecology, infectious hoof diseases of livestock and/or wildlife, or other diseases affecting the domestic livestock-wildlife-human interface, including experience in outreach communication to the general public are especially encouraged to apply. As a faculty member, the successful candidate will be expected to establish effective collaborations with current WSU programs and be active in the department’s graduate program, including mentoring graduate students and serving as a member of student advisory committees. The successful candidate will also be expected to be active in the academic service arena. The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
